Papu Gomez Banned for Two Years for Doping

Alejandro "Papu" Gomez, the Monza forward and Argentina World Cup winner, has been banned for two years for doping.

Gomez failed a doping test in November 2022, shortly before the World Cup and while he was still playing for Sevilla. According to Relevo, Gomez took a syrup from one of his sons to treat bronchospasm, but he did not check whether the product was on the list of banned substances. The syrup contained terbutaline, which is a banned substance.

Gomez has only made two official appearances for Monza this season. He made his debut against Sassuolo in a 1-0 home win, coming on in the 76th minute, while he played 25 minutes plus added time in a 3-0 home win over Salernitana.

Monza released a statement on their website confirming the ban and stating that it was due to an unintentional assumption. The club also said that they reserve the right to evaluate the next procedural steps.

Gomez's ban is a huge blow for both Monza and Argentina. He is a key player for both teams and his absence will be felt.
